ODD HOW the internet has made the unfashionable fashionable. Once upon a time, the lonely hearts columns of newspapers and magazines were seen as a last resort for people with no other way to meet a potential partner.

Then along came the internet and suddenly the new version of the lonely hearts columns online dating websites became fashionable. As a result, even the print versions of this phenomenon lost the lonely hearts image and became quite perky and sometimes naughty.

So today, if you’re a man looking for Ms Right, there is a good chance you have included online dating websites in your armoury and that you don’t particularly care who knows about it.

Research from the US suggests that men and women use online dating more or less equally and that the average age of users is 48 years. In middle age, perhaps following a divorce, many people cannot stomach a return to the joys of nightclubs and bars and turn to the internet.

The US research found internet free personals dating to be more popular among more sociable people. It’s an interesting finding because I would have thought that shy people would regard the internet as a boon when it comes to finding a potential partner, but not so.

Within all this, there was an odd finding reported on the World of Psychology blog. It appears that people with high self-esteem who value relationships are more likely to use online dating that those with low self-esteem.

What’s odd is that people with low self-esteem who use online dating tend to place a lower value on relationships. It may be that those with low self-esteem who value dating personals relationships fear rejection and therefore avoid online dating. But if you don’t place a high value on relationships then the rejection doesn’t matter as much.

This activity results in less than two hours of offline dating per week. Twelve hours a week looks like a lot of time, yet researchers suggest that people dating online actually make superficial choices which increase the likelihood of a mismatch.

Something similar seems to happen with online dating. You have a whole database of people to choose from so the choice you make is less careful than in the offline world. In the offline world, let’s face it, your range of choices at a given time might run to, well, one person.

Does this mean online dating is a no-no? Not at all. If I was in the market I would definitely give the online route a go. In my view, the research simply means that men seeking a partner on the internet need to choose carefully from among people whose interests make them compatible.

And maybe they should confine themselves to choosing from a relatively small number of prospective partners and not be surveying half the women on the planet remember, the bigger the pool, the poorer the choice you’re likely to make.

Online dating sites are also reporting spikes in their memberships. For example, match.com saw a 15% increase; eharmony.com reported a 40% jump. Scott says the matchmaking industry is recession-proof because -- ultimately -- everyone just wants to find love.

"I think a lot of people are feeling vulnerable right now," explains Scott. "I think the economy is making people reflect on what is important in their lives. Maybe it is not so much the car or the jewelry or the trip to Europe."

Sue Robinson and Bill Neeb are planning to go to Seattle this weekend since they both love traveling. They are engaged and may marry by the end of the year.

A group of North East creative companies is being brought together to meet with freelancers and smaller agencies with the aim of encouraging collaboration.

The a:design association is holding a face-to-face event on Thursday 23rd July to help creative organisations and freelancers break into the big agencies.

Companies taking part include the likes of Different, Infinite Design or Twenty First Century Media.

In a speed dating format attendees will be given three minutes to talk to each of the creative big-hitters in the room.

Sam Morton of Twenty First Century Media, a design board member and one of the face-to-face panellists, said: It’s speed dating for your business. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the story of a man who is born old and slowly digresses in age until he dies as an infant the movie news in this blog. Brad Pitt plays the main character, and he embarks on an oddball romance with Cate Blanchett, who plays Daisy. They meet as children, but their lives never seem to totally match until they reach their 40s at the same time. I liked the acting in the film a lot; Pitt and Blanchett do a great job of making this unreal situation seem believable. Critics agree that the performances are outstanding, and they have called it an epic fantasy. The film felt too long, though. Once you know the secret of Benjamin Button, and you realize that Daisy is his true love, the wait to see the story come to its conclusion seemed to take forever. With a run time of two hours and forty-six minutes, I felt like many of the longer montages in the movie could have been cut without sacrificing any of the story. Overall, it was a good film that just felt a little long.

Frost/Nixon is a behind the scenes in movie reviews look at the preparation for and the taping of the David Frost and Richard Nixon interviews. Originally it was a Broadway play. Many in Hollywood have said that this film is the best of director Ron Howard's career, even better than his Oscar winning film, A Beautiful Mind, and I would agree. At first glance, the plot doesn't sound like it would make an interesting film, yet Howard takes the wrangling and manipulation on both sides of the famous interview and turns it into a tight, tense thriller. The acting by Frank Langella and Michael Sheen, both of whom played the roles on Broadway, is some of the best of the year, and their clashes onscreen give Frost/Nixon the dramatic edge that makes it a great historic film.

Critics have rallied behind Slumdog Millionaire, a film by Danny Boyle that was filmed in celebrity movie archive the streets of Mumbai, India, as the best film of the year. It is the story of a young man, Jamal, who grew up on the streets and, against all odds, makes it to the final round of the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Accused of cheating, he is tortured and grilled about how he knew the answers, and as he tells the story of his life, we see how his life experience as a child of the streets gave him the answers. The film keeps you guessing about whether Jamal will make it through the final round and reunite with the love of his life, Latika. Slumdog Millionaire is one of the most hopeful films I've seen in many years. The adversities that Jamal faces are beyond the comprehension of most North Americans, but to watch someone who is unsure where his next meal will come from remain optimistic about the future is a great lesson. The sharp editing and clever script keep the story moving, and when I saw the film, the audience cheered and applauded at the end of the film. If you're unfamiliar with the rich culture of Bollywood, Slumdog is a wonderful introduction to that style.

Watchmen's Rorschach - The Antihero's Antihero

The man in the ink-blot mask, raincoat and tattered hat may look like the most unlikely superhero around by movies review, but this grizzled lunatic is one of the comic book industry's most revered characters. With a fine line in extreme violence and a catalogue of vocal oddities, Rorschach is the hard-as-nails central character in the Watchmen graphic novel and hit feature film adaptation, but with such a battered appearance, murderous personality and unpredictable nature, what is it that makes him to loved by comics and film fans?

It is perhaps Rorschach's unpredictable nature that is the key to his appeal. Aside from the constantly changing nature of his mask, along with its impossible physical properties, he cuts a strange, thin figure and is a million miles away from the traditional superhero mould. He is so far away from being Superman or Spider-Man that he seems almost believable. Rorschach's brand of justice is brutal, immediate and swift, also keeping him seem more real. Behind the mask lies a madman, that much is certain, but despite his deranged brutality and the almost callous nature of his work, he is still a hero, bringing justice to an unjust world.

Jackie Earle Hayley plays Rorschach in Zack Snyder's massively elaborate feature film adaptation of the legendary Watchmen celebrity gossip graphic novel, and it is this inspired casting that gave many fans hope that the movie version would do the story and the character justice. He has the perfect build for Rorschach and the perfect mannerisms, as well as a voice that is about as close to many people's idea of Rorschach as it is possible to get. It is the casting of the Watchmen film that gave the naysayers food for thought, as Zack Snyder had gone for the right people for each character instead of big names that would satisfy studio bosses.

Here is a comic book character who gives a killer the option to saw off his own hand in order to live, after throwing a dog (with it's head split in half) through a window at the felon. This is a man who breaks bones and intimidates and threatens. A man whose mind is so twisted and scarred that he drives a noted psychiatrist to question himself. He is the ultimate comics antihero.

So with the Watchmen film, a whole new avenue of debate has been opened up for fans- is this the definitive Rorschach? Has Snyder brought us as close a representation of the character as it is possible to get on a cinema screen? While there are inevitably lines and shots that have been omitted from the finished product, it does seem that the Rorschach we see on the big screen is very much the character we have loved for so many years on the printed page. That is no small achievement, but as we all know, the best we would get out of Rorschach himself on the matter would be a brief 'Hurm'.

In 1920's, comedy in the form of animated cartoons became popular. The characters have been receiving "special cartoon treatment." To name a few, there are Felix the Cat, Betty Boop and Krazy Kat.
